Volatility, Then a Higher Finish

Stocks broke a two-week losing streak. The S&P 500 and the Dow each gained about 1% for the week, to 7,490 and 52,485, and the Nasdaq rose 1.6% to 25,374. The path there was rough: the Dow fell more than 1,100 points Wednesday, its worst day since April 2025, then surged 614 points Thursday as the Nasdaq snapped a six-day losing streak. Earnings did the heavy lifting, with Microsoft up 16% on Azure growth and Amazon jumping 15% on cloud strength, while Apple fell 7% as chip shortages raised costs and cut June-quarter production. July itself finished mixed: the S&P 500 slipped 0.1%, the Nasdaq fell 3.2%, and the Dow added 0.3% for a fourth straight monthly gain. The CNN Fear & Greed Index sits at 42 (Fear), little changed on the week and up from 29 a month ago.
